Yeast and Other Infections in Pregnancy

If you feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things that a pregnant mother needs to maintain, know that we have all been there. we might not feel like maintaining hygiene, but we need to accept the fact that pregnancy does weaken our immunity system and we are incredibly vulnerable to infections.

 

So, here is a tip from experience, its better to be cautious than getting infected from unseeable bacteria or pathogens that can cause a mountain of trouble!

 

Lets discuss about the types of bacteria that are harmful and the dangers they carry.

Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes, is a bacteria, that can be found in unpasteurized dairy products such as milk, cheese, sometimes in processed food, pre-cut fruits or vegetables and in raw or uncooked fish items. It can cause listeriosis, which is a serious infection and can result in miscarriage still birth and at times newborn infections.

E.coli

Escherichia Coli is a bacteria that resides mostly in undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk, unwashed vegetables and raw sprouts. It can cause severe diarrhea dehydration and lead to kidney failure.

Salmonella

Salmonella is a bacteria, found in undercooked poultry, eggs and unpasteurized milk. It can cause severe food poisoning resulting in diarrhea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Trichinella

Trichinella is a parasitic worm that are found in any type of red meat of animals that might be infected with this parasitic worm. It can cause fever, swelling of face and eyes, muscle pain and gastric issues. Moreover this parasite can transfer into placenta that can infect the baby and cause miscarriage.

Campylobacter

This bacteria is mostly found in contaminated water, undercooked poultry and unpasteurized milk. It can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever in pregnant mothers.

Toxoplasma Gondii

This parasitic worm is commonly found in pork, lamb and venison contaminated soil, cat feces and unwashed fruits and vegetables. It can get into the placenta and cause severe issues in the baby such as neurological disorder, eye damage or even still birth.

Clostridium Botulinum

This bacteria is found products such as honey (harmful for infants under one year), canned foods and fresh fruits and vegetables contaminated with soil. It produces a serious toxin which causes botulism, and can cause difficulty in breathing swallowing for pregnant mothers.

Staphylococcus Aureus

This bacteria is present in contaminated products that are not handled with care or stored improperly. resides in dairy, meat and salads. It can lead to blood infection in pregnant mothers.

It is always preferred to always consume pasteurized dairy products, maintain safe water hygiene, eat steaming hot processed foods, thoroughly wash fruits or vegetables and completely avoid raw fish – to proactively avoid any unfortunate issues for ourselves and the little one.
